Workshops
Professora Madeira
Capoeira Angola workshop on Friday 29th of November, 5.30pm.
“I began my capoeira journey in Aotearoa/New Zealand where I first saw capoeira at a class in Wellington with Mestre Brabo and fell in love with the sound of the berimbau. Soon after, I moved to Scotland and began my journey in Capoeira Angola with Contra Mestre Dion and Groupo Mão no Chão in Edinburgh.
I later moved to Australia and in 2011 founded Mão no Chão Meanjin, where we teach the music, movement and traditions of Capoeira Angola with an emphasis on building community and connection.
In 2023 I was formed as a Professora and now have the privilege to continue my work under the guidance of our reference Contra Mestra Dana (Brincadeira de Angola RJ).
My greatest joy is to connect and share my love of Capoeira Angola with camaradas old and new.”
Mestre Val Boa Morte
Capoeira workshop on Saturday 10th of June, 10am.
Mestre Val Boa Morte started Capoeira at the age of 9 in his neighbourhood of Liberdade in Salvador Bahia, Brazil. He first fell in love with Capoeira music and particularly berimbau. After training with his Mestre Alfredo, at the age of 15 he started giving classes himself when Mestre Alfredo left Salvador.
Mestre Val first overseas travel was a trip to Angola at the age of 17 with his dance master, Mestre Luiz Badaró. Mestre Val spent a few years teaching in Argentina and, in 1993 travelled to Australia. The story of Capoeira Filhos da Bahia then started, more than 30 years ago in Melbourne.
Along all those years Mestre Val had the chance to teach, perform, and share Capoeira all over the world across 57 different countries.
Dinner
